James D. Zellerbach founded Hanzell Vineyards in 1953. After time spent in Burgundy, Zellerbach became educated by the region’s wines and grapes—Pinot Noir and Chardonnay which remain the main two grapes used in Hanzell wines today. Hanzell sits at the southern toe of the Mayacamas mountain range overlooking the south-western end of Sonoma Valley and San Pablo Bay.


Jason Jardine leads the Hanzell team through the implementation of Integrated Biological Farming practices, allowing the vineyards to thrive and best express themselves in the wines. Their “bio farm” approach allows them to reduce the carbon footprint and make use of natural nutrient cycles, just as farming was prior to the advent of chemical applications. Hanzell is CCOF Certified Organic.
